Workshop #4: Framed Quilt Block
Class Description: In this workshop you will create a lovely one-of-a-kind masterpiece featuring some of your favorite fabrics. This will make a great conversation piece for your quilt studio or other place where creativity is celebrated. This is a very quick and satisfying project. All skill levels will leave with a finished piece. And remember, this is a No-Stress Zone, so no fussing! It’s all about fun, so bring a friend and enjoy!
Supply List:
- Choose a Frame large enough to accommodate your selvages. The frame in the sample photo is 18” x 24.” A frame should be at least 11” wide and more than that in height.
- A piece of Muslin that is 4 inches wider and longer than your frame size.
- One sandwich bag of Selvages (cut about 1 ½ inches wide)
- Scissors (for cutting the selvage lengths to size)
- Sewing machine
- Off-white Thread (will match most selvages)
- Straight Pins, about 6 (to hold long selvages in place)
- Iron and ironing surface
- Masking tape

Directions:
Step 1: Starting near the bottom edge of your muslin foundation, attach the first selvage by sewing along the bound edge. (See “How to Make a Selvage Quilt” at SelvageQuilts.com).
Step 2: Place the second selvage above the first so that it overlaps the raw edge of the first selvage. Sewing the bound edge of the second selvage secures the raw edge of the first selvage.

Step 3: Arrange selvages diagonally in the upper left corner of the foundation, as shown.
Or you may choose another arrangement that you like. When you are finished, press foundation flat.
Step 4: Lay the selvage block face down. Place the glass on top of your block. (It is a good idea to put masking tape along the edges of the glass first so that it is safer to handle.) Fold fabric around glass and hold in place with masking tape. Place in frame and secure the back. Hang and admire!
