Workshop #3: Wall Quilt (about 29” x 29”)

Class Description:

In this workshop you will make a unique one-of-a-kind wall quilt featuring your favorite fabrics from your stash! This will look great on the wall of your quilt studio. Quilt makers of all skill levels are welcome. You will go home with a finished wall quilt, the skills to invent countless other selvage quilts, and a refreshed creative spirit! The “Quilt Police” haven’t established any rules of decency regarding selvage quilts, so come and have fun!

Supply List:

  • Eight 10-inch squares of a Solid dark fabric
  • One 10-inch square of Any fabric. (This could be dark, too.)
  • Batting, about 36” x 36”
  • Backing, about 36” x 36”
  • Binding, (about 1/3 yard) Cut 4 strips 2 ½” wide.
  • One sandwich bag of Selvages (cut about 1 ½ inches wide)
  • Scissors (for cutting the selvage lengths to size)
  • Sewing machine
  • Off-white Thread (will match most selvages)
  • Straight Pins, about 6
  • Iron and ironing surface
  • Rotary Cutter, Mat, and Ruler (to trim selvage-covered foundations)

Directions:

Review “How to Make a Selvage Quilt” on SelvageQuilts.com. See how to cover a square with selvages horizontally and on the diagonal (for half-square triangles).

Step 1:  Cover 4 dark squares on the diagonal, making half-square triangles.

Step 2:  Cover 4 dark squares horizontally (but start the process about 1/3 of the way up from the bottom edge).

Step 3:  Cover one square completely with selvages (horizontally).

Step 4:  Trim the selvage edges so that the blocks return to 10” square.

Step 5:   Arrange the 9 blocks into a Monkey Wrench pattern as shown in the photo. Attach blocks.

Step 6:  Sandwich with batting and backing. Baste, quilt, and bind as desired.
